Carved foot

Trimming the base and feet has not been my most favorite pottery task so a lot of times I add the feet at the hard cheese stage. Was looking through some flickr images when I came across some photos of Japanese teabowls with carved feet. Was intriqued by the results they were getting so I gave it a try.

Hi Keith,

I've been doing some carved feet for my pots also, but it helps to have some fine tools to work with. I found some in my garage that my friend says are jewelry tools but I'm sure they were used to make coins a long time ago in metalurgy (if that's the right spelling). They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes for filing and cutting into the clay for feet. You can use them when it's leather hard or when the clay is very dry.
